MathSense Tutor Privacy Policy

Who we are. MathSense Tutor is made by L8O LLC, San Francisco, CA 94112, United States ("MathSense", "we"). This policy covers the Tutor for individual learners and parents — on mathsense.ai/tutor and in the MathSense Tutor app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Teachers using the grader and schools using MathSense Homework have their own notices on our Legal page.
The short version. We collect what the tutor needs to help you with a math problem: your account details, the photos and text you send, the conversation, and a learning record. An AI model reads your problem and a math engine checks the arithmetic and algebra. We never use your work to train AI models, we never sell data, and there are no ads and no advertising trackers. Sessions and photos are deleted automatically after 90 days, and you can export or delete everything yourself at any time.

1. What we collect

  • Account. Your first name, email address and a password (stored by Firebase Authentication as a hash — we never see it), and the year you were born, which we use once to check you are old enough to use the Tutor on your own.
  • Your work. The photos you take or choose, the problems and steps you type, the tutor's replies, hints you asked for, practice problems and your answers to them.
  • A learning record. Counts of problems, turns and practice; on paid plans (web only), which topics you worked on and which kinds of slips came up more than once. No AI decides this; it is counted from what you did.
  • Usage counters. How many problems, practice problems and messages you used today and this week, so the free plan's limits work.
  • Technical data. When you sign in or send a request, our servers and Google's log your IP address, device or browser type, the time, and (in the app) the app version and platform. We use these for security and to keep the service running.
  • Payments (web only). If a parent or learner buys a plan on mathsense.ai, Stripe processes the card; we keep the plan, dates and a Stripe reference, never the card number. The app has no purchases.
  • Where you came from. If you arrived from a search ad, the search term (never a Google click identifier) is kept with your account so we know which searches bring learners. It is never shared with the advertising company.
  • Email. We send account emails (confirm your address, reset your password) and a short welcome series for learners 13 and older. Marketing email is off by default for learner accounts.
We do not collect your location (photos are re-encoded on your device, which removes GPS and camera data before upload), your contacts, advertising identifiers, or anything from your photo library beyond the one photo you pick.

2. How the tutor uses your work

Your photo or typed problem is read by an AI model (Google Gemini, through the Gemini API) to understand the problem and your reasoning, and by a math engine we wrote that checks the arithmetic and algebra line by line. The model's reply is checked before it reaches you. Under Google's API terms for paid use, your prompts and photos are not used to train Google's models, and we do not keep model output in logs.

3. Analytics and measurement

  • In the app: no analytics software is included. The app sends nothing to any third-party analytics or advertising service.
  • On the web: we count product events without content (for example "a session started", "a hint was requested") with PostHog, hosted in the United States, so we can tell whether the Tutor helps people learn. You can turn this off in My data; the setting also stops the content-free events our servers record.
  • No advertising trackers, no ads, ever, on the web or in the app.

4. Who processes your data

We use a small number of service providers, all under contracts that limit what they may do with the data:
ProviderWhat forWhere
Google Cloud / Firebasesign-in, photo storage, serversUnited States
Google Gemini APIreading your problem and writing the tutor's repliesUnited States
MongoDB Atlasour databaseUnited States
Stripepayments made on the websiteUnited States
Amazon Web Services (SES) and our mail provideraccount and service emailsUnited States
PostHogweb product analytics (never the app, never content)United States
Apple and Google distribute the app through their stores under their own terms; they are not our processors. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

5. How long we keep things

  • Sessions, photos and conversations: deleted automatically 90 days after they were created.
  • Your learning record and account details: as long as your account exists.
  • Usage counters: up to 400 days.
  • Web analytics events: 12 months.
  • Security logs: a limited period set by our cloud provider.
When you delete your account, everything above is removed at once (section 7).

6. Children

  • You must be 13 or older to create your own Tutor account. We ask your birth year to check.
  • Younger children can use the Tutor only through a parent's or guardian's Family plan on mathsense.ai: the parent creates the account, adds the child as a profile and accepts this policy on the child's behalf. Photos a child sends are stored under the parent's account. Parents see a short learning summary, never the conversation.
  • If we learn that a child under 13 has created their own account, we delete it. Parents and guardians can reach us at info@mathsense.ai.

7. Your choices and rights

  • See, export or delete everything yourself, at any time, from My data (web: /tutor/data; app: Account → My data). Deletion is immediate: your sessions, photos, learning record and — for an account that holds nothing else — your login are removed. Any Tutor subscription is cancelled at the same time.
  • Turn off product analytics in My data.
  • Correct your details by emailing info@mathsense.ai.
  • California residents have the right to know, to delete, to correct, and not to be discriminated against for using those rights. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of. Requests: info@mathsense.ai. We respond within 45 days.
  • Canadian residents may access and correct their information and withdraw consent (which may end the service), and may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. Data is processed in the United States.
  • European and UK residents: we process account and content data to provide the service you asked for, security data in our legitimate interest, and optional analytics with your consent (off by default in the app). Transfers to the United States rely on standard contractual clauses. You may access, correct, delete, restrict or port your data and complain to your supervisory authority.

8. Security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our cloud providers. Photos are readable only through short-lived signed links. Access inside MathSense is limited to the people who run the service. We never ask for or store card numbers.

9. Changes

We will post changes here with a new date. If a change matters to how your data is used, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. The in-app privacy notice you accepted when you joined keeps its version number; a new version is shown for acceptance when it changes.
