Guide for math teachers

Grading algebra tests with AI — without losing the method marks

An AI math grader can grade a handwritten algebra test by reading each student’s working from a scan or photo, matching every answer to the right question, scoring each question against the point value on your test with partial credit, and drafting feedback that names the step where the work went wrong — a dropped sign, a term that changed sides incorrectly, a bracket expanded wrongly. With MathSense AI you review every score and comment and approve the paper before any student sees it. Your first assignment is graded free, up to 5 papers, with no credit card.

Why algebra tests are slow to grade by hand

An algebra solution is a chain of lines, and the mark depends on where the chain breaks. To grade fairly you have to read every line, find the first one that does not follow from the one above, decide whether it is a slip or a misunderstanding, and then follow the wrong value through the rest. Thirty papers times eight questions is a lot of chains.

What the grader does with a stack of algebra tests

  1. Reads your test first

Upload the question paper as a PDF or image. MathSense AI finds each question and sub-question and reads the point value printed next to it. You can correct any point value before grading.

  2. Transcribes each student’s working

One file per student — a scan or a phone photo. The handwriting is transcribed line by line, including equations, with a second pass that checks the transcription against the page.

  3. Matches answers to questions

Students answer out of order and continue on the back. Each piece of work is paired with its question by label, page order and sub-question part; an ambiguous label is flagged for you rather than guessed.

  4. Scores each question with partial credit

Each answer is judged on a 0–10 scale and converted to that question’s point value, so a sound method with one sign slip earns part of the marks instead of zero.

  5. Drafts the feedback

The feedback names the line where the reasoning broke and what the correct step was. You edit anything, then approve.

The mistakes it is built to name

Common algebra errorWhat the feedback says
Sign lost when a term changes sidesNames the term and shows the corrected line.
Bracket expanded wronglyPoints to the expansion and gives the right product.
Dividing only one termShows the division applied to every term.
Arithmetic slip in a numeric lineA separate rule-based check re-computes purely numeric lines and names the slip precisely.

What stays in your hands

  • The point value of every question, before grading.
  • Every score and every comment, after grading — change any of them and approve the paper.
  • What students receive: a printout, a download or an annotated copy of their paper, once you approve.

What a graded algebra answer looks like

One equation, one sign slip when a term crosses the equals sign. The method earns its credit and the feedback shows the corrected line.

Illustrative example — simulated student work.

Question (5 points): Solve 3(2x − 1) = 4x + 7.

Student work

6x − 3 = 4x + 7

6x − 4x = 7 − 3

2x = 4

x = 2

Score: judged 6/10 → 3 of 5 points

Drafted feedback: Expanding the bracket to 6x − 3 is correct, and you moved the x terms to one side — the right plan. When −3 crosses to the right it becomes +3: 6x − 4x = 7 + 3, so 2x = 10 and x = 5. Check the sign each time a term changes sides.

You approve or edit it before the student sees anything.

How MathSense AI helps

  • “Every sign error costs me a re-solve with the student’s numbers.”

The drafted feedback names the step and the corrected line, so you check a claim instead of redoing the algebra.

  • “I grade question 3 differently at 9 pm than at 7 pm.”

Every paper is scored against the same point values and the same answer key you set; you adjust anything you disagree with in review.

  • “Students only see the circled answer and the total.”

Each student gets feedback on their own working — what was right and the line to fix — in your words after you edit it.

Questions

Can AI grade handwritten algebra tests?
Yes. MathSense AI reads a scan or photo of each student’s handwritten working, matches each answer to its question, scores it against the point value on your test with partial credit, and drafts feedback that names the step where the work went wrong. You approve every grade.
Does it give partial credit for a sign error?
Yes. Each answer is judged on a 0–10 scale and converted to the question’s point value, so a correct method with one sign slip earns part of the marks. You can change any score before you approve.
Do I have to type up an answer key?
No. MathSense AI reads the questions and the point values printed on your test. You can correct any point value and add the answers you want grading to use, but you do not have to retype the test.
How do I try it on an algebra test?
Create a free account, upload the test and up to 5 student papers, and review the drafted grades. Your first assignment is graded free, with no credit card required.
